The mission of the Animal Welfare Society is to provide services that benefit both animals and people through a variety of programs. Some of the essential services that we provide are listed below.

The AWS provides shelter to hundreds of homeless puppies, kittens, cats and some adult dogs each year. These services are not provided by the Jefferson County Animal Control- they only accept adult dogs, so the AWS provides an important service to the community.

  • The AWS provides pet adoption services to the community. All of the animals available for adoptions are vaccinated, leukemia tested, and spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

  • The AWS sponsors low cost rabies clinics throughout the county.

  • The AWS provides information to the public on animal care, the importance of spaying and neutering, and health risks affecting animals and people (e.g., rabies, injured wildlife).

  • The AWS promotes kindness and respect for animals through special events, public service announcements, humane education programs, a regular column in the Spirit of Jefferson, and dissemination of informational materials and a semi-annual newsletter.

  • The AWS provides financial assistance to the public for spaying/neutering their pets in an effort to reduce the homeless animal population.
